Paint can be from any reputable manufacturer with a couple
of exceptions.
Do NOT use London brand oil colors by Windsor & Newton or
Shiva brand!! They are terrible colors and do not mix well.
Windsor & Newton “Artist’s” brand are exceptionally good, as are Rembrandt, Gamblin, Utrecht & Grumbacher.
There are also many good brush manufacturers. Most brushes that come in pre-selected assortments aren’t worth the money you pay for them no matter how inexpensive (cheap) they are. Brushes are one of the most important tools in your arsenal. If they are of poor quality you’re going to be fighting every step of the way.
A good supplier for both paint and brushes is Utrecht Manufacturing
(612-339-3400). They have a store in
Minneapolis and will ship anything they have. You can also visit the Rochester
Art Center (282-8269)
where there is a satellite store that can order things for you. The order

prices are pretty good.
