Cheryl Wheeler performances are a two-for-one deal: Audiences will relish her rich, soul-baring alto voice, and the next moment laugh out loud at her storytelling. Cheryl Wheeler and guest Kenny White will be at Crossings on Fri., Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m.

If your idea of a folk singer/songwriter concert is a bunch of people clapping politely after songs, and then sitting quietly while the performer says things like "This next song is about ...", well, you've never seen a Cheryl Wheeler concert before.

Cheryl's concerts are more like what you would find at a comedy club then expect to find at a folk music concert. She will tell a story that has you rolling in the aisles, and then sing a song that leaves you wiping tears from your eyes. Listeners enjoy the magic of her beautiful voice singing perceptive lyrics – that’s when they meet poet-Cheryl, writer of some of the prettiest, most alluring and intelligent ballads on the modern folk scene. Before long, there’s an appearance by her evil twin, comic-Cheryl, a militant trend defier and savagely funny social critic. She will talk about some serious current event, and then sing a song that will have you howling with laughter. Her entire concert is an emotional roller coaster.

Wheeler emerges as a gifted and openhearted songwriter approaching the sure summit of her craft. Her abiding faith in her audience’s ability to find their own life reflected in the sweet spaces of her songs reveals an artist comfortably wearing the austere genius that defines folk music’s best traditions. More confidently and beautifully than ever before, she proves that the poet and the comic are one and the same.

Opening for Cheryl and accompanying her during the show is Kenny White. Hailed by reviewers from the New York Times to the San Francisco Chronicle for his “thrilling” and “unique” piano playing, Kenny White is a talented singer/songwriter and a successful NYC-based record producer. He has written, performed, and produced music for hundreds of TV and radio commercials as well as film soundtracks, and has worked with stars like Mick Jagger, Merle Haggard, and Keith Richards.

Although he is an accomplished and sought-after pianist, White has recently become known for his clever lyrics – compared to songwriters as diverse as Randy Newman and Leonard Cohen. His shows include original music, with songs ranging from humorous to heart-breaking, with White accompanying himself on piano and guitar. He often tours with Cheryl Wheeler and with Judy Collins, who released three of his CDs on her Wildflower Records label, and will be opening for several of the Stephen Stills & Judy Collins Reunion Tour.

White is currently touring in support of his new album, LONG LIST OF PRIORS, which features guest musicians such as David Crosby, who says that "Kenny has earned a place among my favorite singer/songwriters. A true wordsmith and musician who reveals a fine sense of humor as well."
