Combine your love for sketching and writing in the natural landscape in a plein air workshop with Tara Sweeney. This two-day workshop takes place Sat. and Sun., Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, from 9 am-4pm. Open to ages 16+.

No prior experience necessary. Bring your curiosity. Walk outside, interact with nature, see what captures your attention. What role does nature play in your creative process? How can it motivate, inspire, focus, expand art making, storytelling, memory? Learn the basics of mingling watercolor and ink to explore nature's inspiration as you create a portable journal on location. You'll practice keen observation, contour line sketching, basic watercolor techniques, and writing from provided prompts.

Hannah Texler, a naturalist from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, will join the group the second day to highlight aspects of Zumbrota's natural history.

Take home a uniquely personal record of this special place and time with an accordion-fold, hardcover, keepsake journal.

Tara Sweeney is an award-winning artist and writer who has been creating with pocket-sized supplies for nearly forty years. "I travel slowly with sketchbook in hand, creating by available light, in all kinds of weather, with strangers looking over my shoulder, both of us wondering what will happen next. I forget to take photos. But I know where I've been and why it matters when I sketch and write."

Tara has been awarded a 2017-18 Minnesota State Arts Board artist initiative grant. "Close to Home: Sketching a Minnesota Year," her debut collection of illustrated creative nonfiction, features the people, places and things in her Saint Paul neighborhood. She has recently retired from 25 years of teaching art for Augsburg College where she designed and led international travel-sketching programs. She earned degrees in studio art, and design from the University of Wisconsin, 1978 and an MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, 1997.
