The Art of Dyeing Silk Scarves with Natural Dyes
with Mette Biering Christiansen

Two scarves included with class.

Nature provides an abundance of colors: Now you can learn how to dye with some of them! Natural dyes can be obtained from flowers, leaves, berries, nuts, bark, roots and lichen, and are beautifully absorbed by silk fiber, which gives the colors a rich glow.

In this class, you will learn how to prepare silk before dyeing it and how to prepare the dye baths. Then, you will dye your own silk scarves to take home. No experience is necessary.

Natural dyeing is a slower and very rewarding process, whether you're a beginner or are experienced at dyeing cloth. Mette will also share her knowledge about which plants -- either growing in the wild or being cultivated - can be harvested locally. You'll know just what to grow in your garden this summer!

Silk scarves and dyes will be provided. Please bring a notebook, good rubber gloves, a plastic bucket if you have one, and some plastic bags to bring your wet scarves home in. Wear casual clothes, and remember to bring your own lunch!

Instructor Mette Biering Christiansen is a native Norwegian living in Red Wing. She is a diploma designer from Milan/Italy, textile worker, natural dyer, and leaves impressions on cloth, textiles, canvases, papers and sometimes metal.
