Micro Mosaic Jewelry

Create your own small garden in an Italian filati mosaic piece.

Create a beautiful micro-mosaic using Italian filati, which are small glass sticks, made in Italy. The resulting mosaic has depth and brilliant color and may become a treasured piece of jewelry. This class is on Sat., Nov. 4, from 9am - 4pm.

In this one-day class, you will create your very own micro-mosaic pendant or pin! No prior art experience necessary, just the openness to learn and have fun. We will discuss basic history, techniques and materials traditionally used for mosaics. You will learn about tools, substrates, adhesives, cutting and working with filati, gold smalti and stained glass. This is a hands on class; we will be working on cutting glass filati with hand file tools and this does require some strength. You will come away with the basic knowledge to move forward on your new mosaic jewelry adventure.

All use of tools and materials to finish your mosaic will be provided, as will several different types of jewelry bezels and some design ideas. Please note: The materials we will be working with are quite small. Some people use magnifier/cheater glasses that help them to see the small pieces. Your individual micro-mosaic jewelry project will measure approximately 2"x 1".
