Beginning Pottery Wheel with Spencer Johannes

Spencer is a studio potter from Sartell, Minnesota. He graduated from Moorhead State University Minnesota in the spring of 2017 where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Emphasis in Illustration, a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Emphasis Ceramics, and Certificate in Professional Portfolio Development. While attending college, Spencer thought he wanted to be an illustrator, but once he discovered his passion for clay, there was no turning back.

He currently resides in Rochester, Minnesota. One of his personal achievements was obtaining the necessary equipment to run a ceramic studio within six months of graduating college. Since he began his studio, his work has been exhibited throughout the United States, and he has been featured in the “Design & Living Magazine.” These days you can find Spencer working in his studio, enjoying time with family and friends, learning a new craft, or playing board games.

Learn the process of wheel-thrown pottery from a lump of clay to a fired piece from Spencer R Johannes. We’ll be breaking down the steps in this approachable class from wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, firing, and glazing. All work completed in this class will be down by the holiday season and will make a great gift.

The classes are suitable for beginners even kids ages 11+ (with an adult) as well as for advanced beginners, those who have some experience with throwing pots and want more time with an instructor. This five-week class is on Tuesdays, April 19 - May 17 from 6:30-9 pm.

These classes have a maximum of ten students, ensuring plenty of student-to-teacher contact time, making them ideal if you have little or no experience with clay and want to test your interest. Get your hands wet and enjoy the process. Wear old clothes and get ready to work the wheel. Tool kits are available through Crossings. The supply fee includes one bag of clay (25 pounds), all glazing materials, and the use of studio tools.

Price is $125, with $18 supplies and $3 per piece for firing.

Please remember - if you are not feeling well, have a fever, or have been exposed to someone ill; please stay home. For the safety of everyone, the instructor will wear a mask and you are encouraged to do the same.
