Transform Photos into Enamel Keepsakes with Amy Johnson

Amy Johnson, an enamel artist from Rochester, Minnesota, blends together metal, fire, and glass to give life and color to her jewelry. She also melds metal to fashion beautiful sterling silver spinner rings, copper bracelets, necklaces, and earrings; each piece has a personality of its own. Some of her work is intricate and alluring, while other pieces resemble a whirlwind of color and light. Amy’s enchanting artwork allows the wearer to embark on a journey of whimsy and laughter.

Join Amy Johnson and turn a photograph of your choice into a long-lasting keepsake through the art of enamel. Class meets on Sun., Dec. 16, from 12-3pm.

You will learn basic enameling skills; how to properly clean your copper and prepare it for the enameling process.  How to sift powdered glass onto copper. Then with repeated firings, you will heat and melt the powdered glass by the use of a Mapp gas torch. You will then apply your photo decal. Class will take a short break while these dry.

In the second half of the class, you will fire the decal to your enameled piece using a kiln. In the firing process, the  image turns from a black and white photo to a vintage, warm 'sepia' photo, look. This antique vintage look is naturally imperfect and full of character.

After firing your enameled piece you will finish off your project by mounting your enamel photo onto a piece of barn siding.  You will leave the class with a ready-to-hang piece of art that you can treasure for many years.

Each student will need to send the instructor an electronic image of a high resolution color or black & white photo no later than 2 days before the class. If you want to use an old image, just snap a copy with a phone or camera.  A copy of this photo will be made into a paper decal and will be provided the first session of the class.

Photos with good contrast work best, but you can use photos of any subject matter you like; wedding photographs, vintage family photos, pets, cars, holidays, memories, family members, aircraft, trains, guitars, bicycles, the opportunities are endless! Great unique gift idea for families, weddings, anniversaries

Students should wear closed toe shoes, natural fiber clothing and have their hair tied back.

Price is $58 plus $15 supplies.
