Enamel Earrings with Amy Johnson

Amy Johnson, an enamel artist from Rochester, Minnesota, blends together metal, fire, and glass to give life and color to her jewelry. She also melds metal to fashion beautiful sterling silver spinner rings, copper bracelets, necklaces, and earrings; each piece has a personality of its own. Some of her work is intricate and alluring, while other pieces resemble a whirlwind of color and light. Amy’s enchanting artwork allows the wearer to embark on a journey of whimsy and laughter.

Come and play with fire and color! Learn the art of enameling, the process of binding powdered glass to a metal surface.  Design and wear your own one-of-a kind earrings. Class meets at 12-3pm on Sun., Apr. 7.

First, you will choose the color, shape, and size of your earrings, making them a truly one-of-a-kind piece of art suited to your style.  In this class, you will learn basic enameling skills. You will learn how to properly clean your copper and prepare it for the enameling process.  You will also learn how to sift powdered glass onto copper. Then with repeated firings, you will heat and melt the powdered glass by the use of a Mapp gas torch. You will complete your design by using milleflori (Italian for “thousand flowers”) wafers, enameled threads, and a variety of stencils.

Come and learn some enameling basics, and take home your very own pair of torch-fired earrings with fine silver ear wires!

Participants should wear closed-toe shoes, natural fiber clothing and have their hair tied back.

Price is $45 plus $10 supplies.
