Writing Classes with Emily Urness

Instructor Emily Urness, MFA has been all shades of writer from poet to playwright and everything in between but she considers her genre of choice to be Creative Non-Fiction.

She has worked as an editor for several literary publications. She strongly believes all you need in life is a pen, a piece of paper and a sense of humor. Emily is currently working on a collection of Creative Non-fiction Essays about her wacky family and her father's journey through MS.

Introduction to Multi-Genre Writing:
What can you do with old photographs, text messages, poems, dialogue and song lyrics? You can write a textured story. Learn techniques to combine multiple genres and story formats to create cohesive, unique and effective stories. Much like mixed media artwork, mixed media writing can have a lasting impact while also exuding a sense of fun and whimsy. This class steps up to the call of modern storytelling in our current mixed media, Internet-savvy landscape, while employing time-proven techniques. In this class, we will discuss examples of multi-genre writing. We will try our hand at creating a multi-genre story, and we will decipher how to work a story from bits, pieces and baubles. This class is open to beginners and teens as well as experienced writers looking to revitalize their writing.

Simply Short
Don't have a lot of time to be creative? Then Simply Short is for you. In this class, we will examine short models of fiction and non-fiction commonly known as Flash. Whether you want to string a bunch of small pieces together, scribe an amazing Tweet, prepare/brainstorm for a longer project, or create a stand-alone story, writing small is a great venue for creative expression. Students will learn and practice the craft of packing a punch in a little package through lessons and fun writing prompts. We will discuss ways to incorporate plot, character, setting, and description. This class is great for everyone from the beginning writer to the experienced writer. Now grab those scraps of paper and your pen and let's get writing!
