Bookbinding Workshop: Case Binding

Anyone who loves books and wants to try making them will enjoy learning to make a case-bound book. Let Jill Krase teach you on Sat., Oct. 14, 12:30 - 4pm.

In this workshop, we will start with some bookbinding basics, getting to know our materials and the small handful of tools that you need for bookbinding.

We'll progress from there to the simple and relaxing tasks of folding our paper into sections with a bone folder and punching holes for sewing with an awl.

Next, we'll take up our needle and linen thread to sew the sections together in the way that all books were made before machines.

Last, we'll make a cover for the book by covering book board in cloth on the spine and paper on the boards. Choose from a colorful assortment of paper and cloth.

At the end of this class you will have one lovely finished hardcover case-bound book and the knowledge and experience to make more. You can adapt your designs for future bindings in a number of ways. We will also discuss how to make your own text and images into folded sections for making books with content at home in the future.

Jill has been making books by hand since 2005 and is the owner of Ovenbird Bindery in Winona, Minnesota. She binds editions and makes artist books and blank books. She has taught a number of workshops and classes. Jill studied bookbinding at the University of Iowa Center for the Book.
